SEPARATION ANXIETY DOG TRAINING IN MELBOURNE
SIMPLE EFFECTIVE HELP THAT ACTUALLY WORKS

If your dog barks, cries, scratches, or becomes distressed when you leave, you’ve probably been told they have “separation anxiety.”

Most people are then advised to:

-
use treats
-
leave enrichment toys
-
slowly desensitise their dog
But in many cases, this doesn’t fix the problem.

That’s because separation anxiety is often misunderstood.
WHAT SEPARATION ANXIETY REALLY IS
In my experience, most separation anxiety isn’t a deep emotional issue.
It’s usually much simpler than that.
It happens because your dog has never properly learned how to be separate from you.
If your dog:

-
follows you everywhere
-
is always included in everything
-
is never asked to be on their own
….... then of course they struggle when you suddenly leave.
They’re not used to it.

IS IT ANXIETY....... OR JUST A TANTRUM?
This is where people get it wrong.
A lot of dogs labelled with separation anxiety are actually:

-
protesting
-
objecting
-
pushing back
In other words, they’re having a tantrum, not a breakdown.
They’re saying:
“I don’t like this, and I don’t accept it.”
And that comes down to one thing:
IT'S A LEADERSHIP ISSUE
Separation anxiety is not about distraction.
It’s not about food.
It’s not about keeping your dog busy.
It’s about LEADERSHIP.
Good leadership means your dog understands:

-
you control space
-
you make decisions
-
they are safe, even when not with you
When that’s clear, your dog doesn’t feel the need to argue.
If you calmly put your dog:

-
in the laundry
-
outside
-
in another room
….... a dog with clear leadership will accept it.

WHY TREAT-BASED TRAINING DOESN'T SOLVE IT
Many people try:

-
food rewards
-
puzzle toys
-
leaving treats when they go out
This might distract your dog temporarily—but it doesn’t fix the problem.
Because the issue isn’t:
“My dog needs something to do.”
The issue is:
“My dog doesn’t accept being separated.”
Once the food is gone, the behaviour comes straight back.

HOW I FIX SEPARATION ANXIETY
The solution is actually very straightforward.
I teach your dog to:

-
accept separation calmly
-
understand boundaries
-
trust your leadership
We do this by:

-
practising separation while you’re still at home
-
setting clear, calm boundaries
-
removing the need for negotiation or reassurance
No fuss. No drama. No overcomplication.

THE RESULT
When this is done properly, dogs:

-
stop barking and carrying on when left
-
settle much more quickly
-
become calmer and more stable overall
Most importantly, they learn:
“I’m okay, even when I’m not with my owner.”
