Dogs Jumping Up on People
WHY IT HAPPENS AND HOW TO STOP IT PROPERLY
If your dog jumps up on you, your visitors, or anyone who walks through the door, it can quickly become frustrating — and sometimes even embarrassing.
It’s one of the most common problems I see.
And while many people are told it’s just excitement or poor manners…
- It’s actually a leadership issue.
WHY DOGS JUMP UP
Most dogs jump up because they are:
-
Overstimulated
-
Seeking attention
-
Unsure how to behave in that moment
But underneath that, there is a more important issue:
- They are unclear about boundaries — particularly around personal space.
THIS IS ABOUT SPACE AND LEADERSHIP
When a dog jumps up, they are moving into your space without hesitation.
That tells you something important.
- Your dog does not fully understand that you control the space around you.
This is a key part of leadership.
If a dog believes they can move into your space freely, they are more likely to:
-
Jump up
-
Push boundaries
-
Become overexcited
-
Struggle to settle
WHY THIS MATTERS
Jumping up is not just a minor issue.
It often affects:
-
Visitors coming into your home
-
Children or older people
-
The overall calmness of your dog
And in many cases, it’s part of a bigger picture.
- Dogs who jump up are often lacking clarity in other areas as well.
WHY IT DOESN'T JUST "GO AWAY"
Many people try:
-
Telling the dog “no”
-
Pushing them down
-
Using treats to distract them
These approaches can sometimes reduce the behaviour temporarily.
But they don’t address the underlying issue.
- The dog is still unclear about boundaries and leadership.
So the behaviour tends to come back.
WHAT CHANGES WHEN LEADERSHIP IS CLEAR
When this is addressed properly, the change is often quite noticeable.
Instead of jumping up, dogs begin to:
-
Approach more calmly
-
Show more awareness of your space
-
Settle more easily
- The behaviour shifts because the dog’s understanding changes.
A CALMER, MORE RELAXED DOG
One of the biggest things people notice is not just that the jumping stops…
It’s that their dog becomes:
-
Calmer
-
Less reactive
-
More settled overall
That’s because they are no longer trying to manage situations themselves.
